phuket-post.com — “Recently spa businesses have opened in many countries, such as China, the Middle East, America and Europe, and we have had really good feedback from them,” Dr. Pattarapon said. “In October we expect to have a signing ceremony with ministries, such as the Commerce Ministry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After that, we will take applications from people who want to open spas overseas so they can register for standards-checking. The development of criteria for our standards will emphasize the quality of the business owners, the staff, the services, the spa products, the spa’s safety practices and the equipment. Most important is that the business identifies as Thai.” read more...

phuket-post.com — Two South African conservationists met with Phuket Governor Niran Kalayanamit on 20 August at Phuket Provincial Hall to persuade public officials to allow them to transform Koh Tanan into Monkeyland. The small island in Chalong Bay lies just northwest of Koh Lon, and the idea is to build a primate preserve modelled on an existing park in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa.
With approval in-hand from a committee of local officials, Zambian-born Tony Blignaut, chief executive officer of Primates Resort (PTY), Ltd., and partner Ronald Derek Taurog of the Touch a Monkey’s Heart Foundation detailed plans to create an education centre and a primate habitat as a new tourist draw in Chalong Bay.
“The project’s goal is preservation of wildlife species and maintaining the environment,” Blignaut explained. read more...

phuketgazette.net — Medical workers, including the director at Patong Hospital in Phuket, have quit the Public Health Ministry due to the enormous workload in the area, the hospital’s director, Dr Taveesak Netwongse, said.
As Phuket attracts many tourists, Patong Hospital was forced to expand from a 10-bed hospital to a 60-bed one to treat the increasing number of locals and foreigners.
Taveesak said many people visiting the hospital come with high expectations of medical service. “They do not think that this is a community hospital; they think it’s like a private hospital or a bigger state hospital,“ he said. read more...

phuket-post.com — Ships will soon start sounding the ocean floor off of Phuket with seismic waves, looking for formations in rock beneath the surface that suggest the presence of petroleum. Maybe soon, oil drilling platforms may rise off the island's west coast.
First, though, the Petroleum Authority of Thailand (PTT) must conclude environmental impact reviews and gain the approval of both the government and local people. That was the aim of a meeting at Phuket Merlin Hotel on June 13 led by Phuket Deputy Governor Piya Paratasinlapin. Representatives of the national oil company's development and production arm, PTT Exploration and Production Public Co., Ltd. (PTTEP), explained the system to be used for seismic mapping and outlined a timetable for surveys and exploratory drilling.
PTTEP's surveys won't be the first for the Andaman Sea, however. Major oil companies conducted half a dozen seismic mapping projects during the oil price shocks of the early- and mid-1970s. Also, four other surveys looked for oil in the region during the mid- and late-1990s. None of those covered the areas that PTTEP now wants to survey: five regions scattered across three geographic "blocks" stretching roughly from 150km southwest of Phuket to 320km northwest. PTTEP will contract Pro-En Technologies, Ltd., a Bangkok-based engineering firm, to conduct the research. The budget for the research is estimated at US$5.5 million.

thainewsland.com — Since founding the Phuket Tens in 1998, Patrick Cotter has built the event from modest beginnings as a small five-team invitational to a renowned rugby festival. But in 2004 the Tens, like everything else, were disrupted as Cotter and the entire rugby community was caught up in the horrifying realities of the Tsunami.
The massive waves wiped out much of the rugby scene in Phuket, including the event's ground, but restoration work began immediately and in the last four years the event has taken on a special role as a poignant memorial to one of the victims and as a key fundraiser for crucial work helping the many orphaned children. read more...
