marketwatch.com — This report looks at the operators in the strong Thai mobile market. When two new mobile players - TA-Orange and Hutchison CAT - entered the market to challenge the entrenched duopoly of Advanced Info Service and Total Access Communications, the competition became increasingly vigorous. Two other operators, Thai Mobile and CAT Mobile, also entered the market in a confusing fashion and without much impact. The local mobile sector has seen a sustained period of high competition involving heavy price-cutting as the battle for market share raged. There was likely to be a push for consolidation, especially as the market gets closer to saturation. The government's sectoral reform, once finalised, should also have a major impact on the shape and direction of the market. read more...

farang.pai-nai.com — Konica Minolta today stunned the industry by announcing that it will be exiting the camera business. Unlike Nikon, which announced just a week ago that they were exiting most of the camera market, Konica's exit is complete.
The company will withdraw from both film and digital camera market. In addition, Konica will also exit the camera film business. Sony will acquire Konica's camera technology and will also provide service and support to existing customers.
Some of Konica's high-end consumer cameras compared favorably with professional cameras. For example, the "Dimage" series had body-integrated anti-shake technology, high-resolution LCD monitor and could shoot up to seven frames a second. read more...

farang.pai-nai.com — Telecommunications operator True Corp. announced yesterday its mobile phone unit TA Orange will be renamed True Move, and said it aims to garner a one-third market share this year.
The 100 million Baht rebranding campaign, which includes television and print media advertising, as well as the unit's stores and dealers, comes almost two years after France-based Orange S.A. in 2004 sold its controlling stake in the cellular operator to minority shareholder True, True President and Chief Executive Supachai Chearavanont told reporters Tuesday.
True Corp. was permitted to retain the use of the Orange brand for two years following Orange's withdrawal. "We are hoping to raise brand awareness this year, as a part of our aggressive marketing campaign to increase market share," said Supachai.
True has targeted a sharp increase in mobile phone net subscribers this year to 5.7 million, from 4.45 million at the end of last year. Supachai said True Move is aiming to capture a one-third share of the domestic market this year. read more...

farang.pai-nai.com — The Bangkok Post reports that local mobile telephone users will have one more digit to remember starting from June, according to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC). The switch to 10 digits from nine will increase the potential number of telephone numbers from 90 million to 300 million, sufficient for expected growth over the next 30 years.
Mobile-phone users will have to add an '8' in the middle of the existing two-digit prefix, followed by the existing seven-digit number, in order to make a mobile-to-mobile call. For example, numbers starting with 01 and 09 will become 081 and 089 respectively.
Gen Choochart Promprasit, the NTC chairman, said the NTC board would discuss the new 10-digit system this week, with the result to be proposed to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) for acknowledgement. read more...

farang.pai-nai.com — This year we are in for a new line-up of one-tone pickup trucks at the Bangkok Motor Show, including the new Ford Ranger and Mazda's Drifter BT-50 which replaces the Mazda Fighter. Mazda's BT-50 will be another pick-up representing the Blue Oval's (Ford) stable at the Bangkok show.
A Mazda representative said Mazda BT-50 is a "global name that will be used in all markets" and is inline with the manufacturer's current naming system.
Mazda BT-50 details remain sketchy, but Mazda has said that the Mazda BT-50 has a new MZR-CD direct-injection commonrail turbo diesel engine which delivers a combination of power and fuel economy with the highest torque and best fuel economy in its class, and like its Ford Ranger cousin, have passenger car-standard comfort levels.
Mazda BT-50 Drifter will probably be available in overseas markets from late 2007. Mazda's Sales managing director Fumio Tone said he was very confident that the Mazda BT-50 would help Mazda maintain its strong growth in the market.

farang.pai-nai.com — The first thing that hits you upon entering Pantip Plaza in Bangkok, are aggressive youths, mostly male but even a few females, who jump out and block your way as you enter. They even grab your arm firmly as your pass, and shout in your face "Sexy DVD, Sexy Movie", and at the looks of the covers of these movies they are a bit more then only sexy, they won't go away even when you wrestle yourself free.
You get pounced on as much as three times in less than a minute on entering and leaving Pantip Plaza.
In all my travels around Thailand, over several visits and several years, the only place I have had this happen to me is at Pantip Plaza. And it happens every time. I felt like punching sellers. It does nothing but encourage the bad view that Thailand has in foreign countries. Yet Thailand is a largely Buddhist and Muslim country where morals are very conservative, even today. Not so at the entrance to Pantip Plaza in Bangkok read more...

farang.pai-nai.com — If we look back on the last 12 months, we could say that broadband ADSL connections revolutionized the Internet use in Thailand.
The technology of ADSL is not even available to everybody in Thailand or the technology behind ADSL, is evolving into a faster beast called ADSL2+ which will increase the maximum bandwidth to 24Mbit.
There can be little doubt that ADSL2+, or also called ITU G.992.5, without broadband the internet would be a very slow place indeed.
But delivering broadband raises many issues for the Thai service providers. To get high-speed connections to urban areas means using a city's own phone infrastructure, an infrastructure that can be 100 years old.
Some of the copper expected to deliver high-speed data to our computers may have been around since the telephone was introduced in Thailand, and all of it is based on a technology dreamed up at the turn of the previous century.
